Marathon ViDoc highlights the dark world and survival challenges of extraction shooters – PlayStation.Blog

Behind the scenes, the team at Bungie has been working very hard on Marathon, our latest PvPvE extraction shooter* – where the dark sci-fi world of Tau Ceti collides with tense survival FPS gameplay.

In Marathon, players scavenge the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV as a bio-cybernetic Runner while surviving against hostile UESC security forces, rival Runners, and an unpredictable environment in search of fortune.

ViDoc today shared a new look at Marathon’s gameplay and immersive sci-fi setting. The team is also exploring updates since Alpha, such as improved visual fidelity, melee chat, solo play, and a new Runner shell: Rook.

In Tau Ceti, death is the first step.

Your journey begins at the Perimeter proving ground, where you will study cybernetics and learn the basics of how to extract alive. Then, the anomalous scarred Dire Marsh ups the stakes and takes you to the remains of a human colony filled with more dangers and greater rewards. As you develop your storage and survival skills, you’ll head to the Outpost, UESC’s forward operating base with patrols, locked rooms, and looting that will have you tempting fate at every turn.

But, it all leads to the end of the game. Hanging high above Tau Ceti is the towering UESC Marathon, which houses the Cryo Archive – the first deck you can explore aboard the derelict colony ship. Complete security measures such as raids to unseal frozen safes and loot the artifacts inside. Each narrow corridor forces you into conflict with heavily armed enemy crews vying for the same prize. Destroy the seventh vault to challenge an entity that even the UESC fears.

Unstable truces, an unforgiving world, and unforgettable experiences await you in Tau Ceti IV. With great gratitude to our amazing community, we were able to test and gather feedback to ensure that we built Marathon with our players in mind. We have made several improvements, including:

• Close-range chat, to forge alliances – or destroy them – on the field
• Fortress, our solo scavenger experience
• Queue Solo Runners, so you can test yourself against the most challenging odds in Tau Ceti
• Updates to overall visual fidelity, to further immerse you in the world

Whether you were with us in April for our first Alpha or you’re just joining us now, there’s a rich world full of lore and loot for you to discover when your cybernetic biosynthetic shell takes its first steps into our new world.

We’ve built Marathon to shine on PlayStation 5, with the aim of delivering smooth, intense combat – whether you’re playing with your crew on an overnight run, playing solo, or teaming up in a team of three. The PS5 hardware is perfect for us to bring this dark and gritty world to life, and we can’t wait for you to try it out.

Marathon releases in March 2026 with a target price of $39.99/€39.99/£34.99, with additional regional pricing to be announced.
