Lumines Arise releases tomorrow, November 11, 2025, on PlayStation 5. It’s been over 20 years since the original Lumines was released at the launch of PlayStation Portable in 2004. Lumines Arise is a complete reimagining of the series’ block-dropping puzzle gameplay using the latest technology on PS5 (with optional PS VR2 compatibility). We bet you’ve never experienced a puzzle game that takes you on an emotional synesthetic journey, full of sound and light like this, whether you’re a long-time fan or just learning about Lumines for the first time.
I’m Game Director Takashi Ishihara of Enhance, and I wanted to take this opportunity, along with Executive Producer Tetsuya Mizuguchi, on the eve of this release to reveal some behind-the-scenes information about the game’s development and share with you why we think Lumines Arise is so different.
You may be familiar with our previous title, Tetris Effect: Connected (available on PS4 and PS5, and also optionally playable on PSVR/PS VR2). Believe it or not, the game takes a lot of influence from previous Lumines titles. In turn, Lumines Arise now combines many of the things we learned during the development of Tetris Effect, bringing them back to Lumines.
The Tetris Effect and Lumines: A shared language
If you’re even remotely familiar with Tetris Effect: Connected, just take a look at Lumines Arise and you’ll know that it comes from the same development team. Playing with either one may make it seem like inducing synesthesia (a phenomenon where stimulating one sense subconsciously stimulates another sense simultaneously) is an easy thing to do, but it’s actually very difficult to do!
At Enhance, synesthesia is an everyday word and this exploration of the concept of sensory crossover continues with Lumines Arise—we want every stage in the game to connect the experience to your emotions as well. Tetris Effect: Connected also does this, and its Journey mode narrative (although subtle) really resonated with players, triggering some strong emotions in players by the end of the game.
To do this effectively, we had to build a shared vocabulary within the development team to communicate to each other a vision of what we wanted to achieve at each stage, how we wanted players to feel, and whether or not we achieved those goals. Being open and honest about what you see and feel can be difficult in any work environment, but even with new members joining the team who are not part of Tetris Effect: Connected, we were able to do it.
Different journey
In Tetris Effect: Connected, we depict the journey of the heart using music, lyrics and visuals. For Lumines Arise, the single-player Journey mode is about your personal growth from darkness to light.
Even though they look similar, the puzzle gameplay in each is very different. And the differences don’t stop there. With Tetris Effect, we tried to create a “zen-like” state where players can enter a flow that affects you. Lumines Arise is the opposite—it’s an exit journey where you start out alone in the first stage and enter the outside world, encountering various stimuli, experiencing various emotions, and meeting other Loomii player avatars along the way. This is the “Rise” section of Lumines Arise. The narrative of leaving your comfort zone, getting out into the real world, and discovering something new.
While Tetris Effect’s visuals are often abstract and introspective, Lumines Arise transports you to real-world environments, including neon-filled city streets (Neon Streets), peaceful winter landscapes (Snowfall), chaotic nightclubs (Mirror Ball), and serene beach scenes (Island Breeze). Some levels connect you to food so closely that you can taste it (yes—Slice & Dice has fruits and vegetables) or creatures you might encounter in the overworld, so you can feel their beauty (Goldfish Tango, Seahorse Sway) or terrifying nature (Spider Webs or Serpent Clash).
This “open” narrative is something we want to challenge players at Lumines Arise. The single-player Journey mode has over 35 stages, and we hope you’ll share what feelings and emotions emerge during your experience.
Commit to puzzle games
When many people hear “puzzle game,” they probably imagine something that is easy to play on a handheld device.
However, there is a reason why we at Enhance dare to continue pursuing puzzle games using a console connected to your TV or VR. Puzzle games are a genre that to date has not evolved or changed significantly in terms of music, visuals, or overall experience. We want to change that.
Unlike other games that are more “easy to enjoy for a short time”, we want to be creative experience designed for deeper experiences in the living room, private space, or VR, allowing players to “play for a long time, forever.” Puzzle games are perfect for the kind of synesthesia connection we strive to provide at Enhance—fair play feel nice to play.
But don’t worry—we want to make games in these and other fun genres too! Not only is Lumines Arise a fully formed single player game, but we also have competitive cross-platform multiplayer, leaderboards you can tackle solo, a variety of rule-changing Missions, and more.
Astro Bot lands in Lumines
We’re eager to collaborate with other game makers and forge connections between Lumines Arise and the rest of the gaming world as well. With the release of Lumines Arise on PlayStation 5, an Astro Bot collaboration is at the top of our wish list. Thanks to the amazing people at Team Asobi and PlayStation, we can make it happen!
We thought, “What would happen if Astro Bot entered the world of Lumines Arise?” Our biggest concern was balancing the appearance of our world with the perfect Astro Bot charm. We needed to combine Astro’s adorable silhouette and design with Lumines’ visual style in a way that felt natural. We really had to “feel” our way through it.
We also received direct input from Nicolas Doucet, director of Astro Bot. His comments deepened our already strong appreciation for Astro and pushed us to create something great. Loomi’s adorable yet sharp dance moves are perfectly in sync with Lumines Arise’s music. I think Astro Bot fans will like it too. What do you think?
Astro Bot is available exclusively as part of the Lumines Arise Digital Deluxe Edition. Enjoy Journey mode with Astro Bot, or play together as partners in Burst Battle multiplayer battles.
Tips From the developer
Finally, for everyone playing starting tomorrow, here are some simple tips from me to help you improve Lumines Arise.
Master the Timeline
In Lumines, Squares you create don’t immediately disappear. They only disappear when the Timeline crosses the screen from left to right and reaches them. The key to getting a high score is assessing the position of the Timeline and deciding whether you can build a Square before passing it next.
If you rush and stack too many blocks, you may not be able to form a large Square. The strategic trick is to deliberately delay the stacking of blocks, then build a large Square all at once right after the Timeline passes!

Use the Center and Sides of the Playfield
If you get a tricky block like a checkered block that is difficult to use to form a Square easily, feel free to drop it into the open spaces on either side. Moving blocks left or right wastes time, so focus on forming a Square in the middle and placing unwanted blocks to the sides—essentially keeping your workspace clean. This makes forming the Box easier.

New Players, View Training Missions
While the rules of Lumines Arise are simple—make Squares to clear them—at first you might wonder, “How do I improve my score?” or “How do I aim for Combo?”
When that happens, try going into the Missions and trying out the Training Missions contained therein. Here, you’ll find 60 different challenges, covering everything from basic techniques that will improve your puzzle game to useful advanced techniques. You can learn step by step, at your own pace, and repeat to continue honing your skills. We highly recommend checking it out.

The entire Lumines Arise team has been waiting for the day we can finally bring this game to PlayStation fans.
We hope you will immerse yourself in the exhilarating experience created by the perfect harmony of puzzle action and appropriate sound and light effects. There’s still time for PS Plus members to get a 10% discount by pre-ordering, so be sure to take advantage of this offer.
We look forward to welcoming you to the world of Lumines Arise on PS5 (and optional PS VR2 compatibility) starting tomorrow!
