The Shark Matrix is a simple and basic robot vacuum that is suitable for homes on a budget. The system uses precise grid tracking and LiDAR-guided precision home mapping for efficient and thorough cleaning. Despite its small size, the Matrix is designed for multi-surface cleaning in homes with pets. Can be used to suck up pet hair, dust, and dander on carpets and hard floors.
Matrix is offered in two versions: CA and SCA. CA is a basic robot vacuum with a charging base; SCA is a robot vacuum cleaner with a charging base that also empties the dust bin of the vacuum cleaner body automatically. Hardware and other features are the same between the two models—the SCA gets only minor upgrades.

Why is house mapping important?
When I look at robot vacuums, I always look for one that has a map memory. (The ability to save multiple home maps is even better). This is true whether I’m looking for a robot vacuum for myself or someone I care about; for a house or apartment.
It’s great to be able to set a robot vacuum and forget it, but having access to a detailed home map takes things to another level. I can’t count the number of times I’ve used the in-app home map to send my robot vacuum to specific dirty rooms or areas! This makes it easy to clean where you need it when you need it, or set up a cleaning schedule to do it for you.
In my house, I find there are certain areas that need cleaning more than others. I’ll send my robot vacuum into the bathroom every 1-2 days pretty consistently, as I have long hair that collects quickly on the floor. Areas like bedrooms need to be cleaned less frequently, and kitchens need to be vacuumed sporadically. Sometimes every three days; sometimes three times in one day. (It really depends on whether I’ve been cooking… And what I’ve been cooking.) Being able to send the Matrix to clean specific areas at specific times makes my life a lot easier.
What sets Shark Matrix apart?
I like that Matrix is offered in both self-discharging and non-self-discharging versions. I would always choose a self-emptying version, but I know they tend to be more expensive and a little more difficult to fit into the house. Shark recommends emptying the base every 30 days; based on my varying vacuuming habits, I know I can empty it every 60-90 days. (But that’s just for my house—yours will probably be different!) It’s nice that the base has no pockets, which my self-emptying robot vacuum bases have never done before. Every little thing helps in reducing household costs, and for something that needs to be emptied every month in a larger home, vacuum bags will add to the benefits.
It’s also great that the Matrix is mapped with 360 degree LiDAR, aka Light Detection and Ranging. LiDAR maps quickly compared to other robot vacuum technologies and works in the dark. It’s pretty good at dodging household objects and, in my experience, consistently excellent at things like staying indoors and not falling down any stairs.
What I really like about LiDAR, and what I love about its inclusion in Shark Matrix, is that it is completely laser-based. It does not record any camera data. This makes it a great choice for anyone concerned about smart home privacy.
My experience with the Shark RV2300SCA
Thanks to its sleek, bagless design, the Shark Matrix is a very simple robot vacuum to add to your home. Yes, it self-empties, but the base is much slimmer than I’m used to seeing from self-emptying vacuums. This is a great vacuum for smaller spaces, and that’s not the only thing I enjoy about using it.
Shark LiDAR mapping is fast and effective. Matrix estimated it would take 50 minutes to map my house; it took less than 30. Every door, bench, and piece of furniture was noted on my house map. While vacuuming, the SharkClean app estimates cleaning time—another unusual thing for robot vacuums. In my experience, these cleaning times are accurate, and if not, it seems like a prudent measure. (That is, if the app estimates cleaning to take 40 minutes, then cleaning will take 30-40 minutes.)
Sharks excellence in 2024/2025
Lastly, in addition to enjoying the Shark Matrix SCA charging base and SharkClean app, I really like the Matrix Robot Vacuum itself. It does a great job of cleaning around the edges of furniture and in the corners of rooms, and it’s very quiet for a robot vacuum. Two things I noticed about the current generation of Shark vacuum cleaners are:
- Include several layers of thick filters to trap as much dust, allergens and dirt as possible.
- Prioritize noise minimization.
